Abstract

Given the potential presence of the virus in respiratory, conjunctival and tear secretions, coupled with the short distance required for ophthalmological evaluation, it is believed that any ocular exploratory or therapeutic procedure, especially with a slit lamp, is considered risky. In ophthalmological practice, health personnel are particularly susceptible to this infection, evidenced by the confirmed cases in this medical specialty during the current crisis. Therefore, the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) on March 18, 2020 recommended the cessation of elective ophthalmological treatments, with the exception of cases that required urgent or emergency care.
