Abstract

Ophthalmopathy associated with thyroid disease is known as "Graves' Ophthalmopathy" in honor of Robert Graves, an Irish physician who described the disease more than 150 years ago. In 1835, he described 3 patients with an enlarged thyroid gland, tachycardia, and also protrusion of both eyes. Graves' ophthalmopathy is the most common extrathyroidal manifestation of thyroid disease. This is an immune-mediated disease in which antithyroid antibodies are elevated.
